Prescriptive vs Descriptive Linguistics

Adam: typoed?
typo’ed
typo’d?
I don’t know which of those is correct

Me: they all are
equally correct

Adam: in that they’re all wrong?

Me: i aint no prescriptive linguist
but that is one way to look at it

I want to say that this article, which you should read, is a good response to this article, but to do so, I’d have to read that second article.   I couldn’t make it all the way through, because any blogger who writes a paragraph too large for my screen is doing something wrong.

I’m not going to go through the second article, but I’m going to give Fry the benefit of the doubt and assume that he is not actively trying to bastardize the English language.  It’s one thing to use a noun as a verb, knowing that it is incorrect.  It’s another thing entirely to say that it is literally raining cats & dogs.

Insomnia & Google Talk

Andrew: dude i am not very good at this whole sleeping thing

Adam: that’s harsh
esp. for if you got a job.
do you at least have a bed now?

Andrew: yeah
but i’m on the couch for some reason
also, as usual, i wasn’t completely accurate
i’m very good at sleeping.
it’s getting to sleep that i have trouble with.
staying asleep? don’t get me started
ha!

Adam: I find staying up really late helps

Andrew: “don’t get me started!”

Adam: hilarious

Andrew: i think i’m going to post this conversation on my blog
because what else am i supposed to do at 3 in the morning?

teriyaki, not karaoke.

I thought this was a fairly funny exchange. This was Friday, my second day in Seattle. Adam’s at work.

Andrew: i’m awake dude

Adam: congratulations.
It’s only noon.
wanna do lunch or something?

Andrew: that’d make sense. when’re you thinking of eating?

Adam: well, I’m getting kind of hungry, so probably soon.

Andrew: cool. how do i get there?

Adam: up for anything in particular?
depends on what you want.

Andrew: i dunno.
oddly enough, i’m in the mood for fried chicken… but i suggest we get something else

Adam: sandwich, burger, teriyaki?

Andrew: hmmm… teriyaki….

Adam: that’s right, you don’t find alot of that outside the PNW, do you ;)

Andrew: pretty much. we just got kfc

Adam: want to go to nasai? same place as last time.

Andrew: i think i’m in the mood for something new
anything new, really

Adam: ok…
last time as in the last time you were out here.
there’s a couple other good teriyaki places.
if that’s still what you’re into.
there’s always sushi :)

Andrew: ah, i dont remember the first karaoke place, so i’d be down for that. nasai you say?
and i think i’ll pass on the sushi

Adam: teriyaki, not karaoke.

Andrew: aw

Adam: ok.
