Samsung Omnia, Eight Months Later

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

As much as I hate to complain about the handheld device which allows me to access the sum of all human knowledge, I need to complain about my Samsung Omnia.

Browsing the web is a huge pain. I don’t even know where to begin. Pages take forever to load.  The controls are inconsistent; sometimes a slight nudge will send me scrolling uncontrollably, other times the page will bounce back to it’s original position, making scrolling impossible.  Sometimes the menu bar refuses to show up, which doesn’t allow me to change pages. Other times it refuses to go away, and takes up half the screen. It frequently clears or just fails to activate my saved passwords.

It’s major saving grace is the camera.  Even though it doesn’t have a flash, it still takes pretty decent pictures indoors & at night.  Daytime pictures are great.

There's an app for that

New Phone

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

I’ve been looking at cell phones for months, and I’ve finally found something that I like.  Today I bought a Samsung Omnia.

The most important thing I wanted was a large screen, and the ability to store & display photos.  Sort of like carrying pictures around in my wallet.

That left me with very few options.  It came down to the Blackberry Storm, the LG Dare, and the Omnia.  I also looked at a few other phones that were to crappy to remember, most notably, the phone that looks like the LG Dare but opens up and has a keyboard.

The Blackberry Storm was originally what I wanted.  After playing with one for five minutes, I hated it, mostly because of the click screen. It’s a cool theory, but it practice, the bubble screen makes it really hard to tell what button  you’re actually pushing.  Again, in theory, the button you’re pushing is supposed to light up when your finger is on it & not clicking….  but it just didn’t.

The LG Dare seemed inferior in almost every way.  It was cheaper, but not by enough.  The only thing I saw as an advantage was the fact that all the buttons are big.  A lot of the time, the Omnia feels like I should be using a stylus, when all I have are my sausage-fat fingers.  Annoyingly enough, the Omnia comes with a stylus – but there’s no place to store it in the phone.  When I lose it, I’ll be sure to revisit this post.

So now I’ve got 100 pictures or so loaded, I’m synced with my Outlook Calendar, I’ve got Benny Hill set as my morning alarm & ringtone, and I managed to stumble my way through a few emails & twitter updates.  I won’t be writing any lengthy blog posts from my phone anytime soon, but I’ve found typing on the touch screen to be less annoying than I imagined.  Still, if you’re seriously into texting, I wouldn’t recommend this or any other touch screen phone.  The qwerty keyboard, or even the regular number pads make for much faster typing.
